NAB 2006 Report

From computer based editing to DVB−H, Advanced ATSC, Video over IP and DVB−ASI… the NAB show was, once again, an engineer's amusement park to behold! There has been no doubt that our industry is changing; however, to be able to view the upcoming changes right on the show floor… it is an experience that all engineers should enjoy!

lg3804Our Leader booth also reflected the variety of the NAB show. Our main attraction was our new LV5800 Multi−Monitor platform; our customers were impressed and our competitors were coming back and taking pictures−what a compliment for our new instrument!

lg3803Our LG3804 DVB-T Signal Generator attracted the RF crowd as well as the very curious. It was interesting to find that most people had never before seen broadcast video on their cell phones and some had no idea the technology was feasible. Equally interesting was our demonstration of our LG3803 8VSB/QAM Signal Generator where we simulated real−life transmission conditions and showed the effect of multipath on the 8VSB transmission envelope.

RF technology aside, our guest DP, Dean Krueger stole the show! Dean and his camera brought real HD production examples to our booth. Just pointing the camera at the show floor provided a perfect example of the headaches associated with live production; the LV5750 proved invaluable in setting up the camera for shots and it was an excellent way to demonstrate our exclusive 5-Bar display capabilities.

lv5750The LV7700 Rasterizer continued to amaze the crowd; many customers could not believe the technology of the LV5750 is fully integrated in such a small package as the LV7700. And, the price is certainly right too!

From a business perspective, our industry is doing well. Several companies have announced the development of HD mobile trucks, the HD production industry is booming and the introduction of more affordable cameras and equipment is going to further encourage growth. Post production is also experiencing growth in HD with the availability of more sophisticated tools and HD post production demand is coming from all directions including theatrical, documentary and shorts. Our broadcast customers are equally active and improvements in computing and networking are changing the very way that control rooms and stations are designed.
